A traidtional red blend of coastal Campania - 80 % Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso - "Castellabate" reflects the nervous acidity of Piedirosso as well as the slightly rough, yet elegant power of Aglianico. Crushed violets, lavender, plum skins and smoke, red and black berries and herbs, vibrant acidity and the unique bitter-salty character stemming from the exposure to sea breezes, make this a rather unique red wine. After ageing in the bottle, it has reached a first level of maturity, that will grow in time.
Somehow Castellabate reminds me of an elegant, highly educated midlle-aged man, who is comfortable in a suit as well as skinny dipping in the blue water of the Mediterranean. Never boring, elegant, versatile.
