Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2014 Monte dei Ragni - only export - not for sale in Italy
It may seem paradoxical, but this wine benefitted from poor weather. 2014 was extremely wet and cool during the first half and throughout July and most of August. Then, September and October were sunny, warm and dry. Like other artisanal winemakers, Zeno chose to leave the few bunches left from summer on the vines until they were overripe. He realised that the quality was insufficient for Amarone, but would make a great Valpolicella Classico. So, he used all the bunches, including the very best, in this wine.
The result is a stunningly warm, exciting wine, which in our view is richer in aromas and complexity, than most Amarone we have ever tried, and has a somewhat velvety depth. Wonderful!
