Among the very few things that the proud Umbrians agree upon – in their firm belief that their hometown is better than its neighbours – is that the wines of Montefalco are great!

Indeed they are, and the most prestigious wines are “Sagrantino”.

The Legend tells us that Saint Francis, native of Assisi in Umbria, brought back from the middle-east a vine to be grown for the production of “sacred” wine, to be drank during the holy mass. Hence the name “Sagrantino”. True or not, this unique grape has been grown in the Montefalco area since the Middle Ages and is considered autochthonous .

A deep dark purple, it is aromatic, has an enormous body and lots of tannins and polyfenols to hold it up. Three main traits hit the nose almost instantly: very ripe, deep red fruit or even jam, cinnamon and rockiness. In the “passito” version – the sweet wine used for the holy mass – , it is so yummy, jammy and sugary and yet potent and dry, that you will enjoy from the first to the very last sip. Careful, you may become addicted! My favorite pairing is with aged pecorino cheese, or on its own, for moments of relax and meditation.

Milziade Antano was one of the oldest and established producers of this great wine. Now his son and grandson are in charge in their family estate, where authenticity can be found everywhere. This is one of the most interesting growers of the area, who doesn’t follow trends, but sets them by maintaining tradition and respecting the land and its fruit. Wonderful!
