In the mid-1980ies, Barolo was not as widely renowned as it is today. When visiting Giacomo Fenocchio in 1985, he welcomed us warmly, plucked some small, orange peaches from the orchard, disappeared in the cellar for a couple of minutes and returned with 4 or 5 unlabelled bottles. He opened all of them, then cut up the peaches, and we tasted his wine with peaches. It was a heavenly experience!

Now Giacomo’s son runs the winery and makes wine just as he learnt from his father. Lots of care for the grapes and the vineyards, strict selection of the best bunches, careful pressing and long maceration on the skins, normally 40 days.

The result are incredibly rich Barolos, with a powerful body that carries an abundance of fruit, fine spice and amazing complexity.

Bussia is a rather rocky vineyard, in Monforte d’Alba, where the new winery was built, not far from the historic one we visited back in the 1980ies. It is classified as 1 level Cru, or in French 1er Cru Classé. This Barolo Bussia 2016 is pure pleasure!

The color is deep garnet red and the bouquet is fine and pleasing, with intense scents of spiced rose and licorice. The flavor is dry, warm, full bodied and balanced with pronounced tannins and a persistent aftertaste. A wine particularly adapted for aging. Best drunk 2026 – 2041.

The Barolo Bussia, with its structure and body characteristics, pairs well with dishes of meat, game and aged cheeses, typical dishes of the local cuisine, as well as with many rich international dishes.
